More crappy, rainy weather today meant meant no sanding or painting this weekend. We’re supposed to hit the high 80s by the end of the week so I’m hoping to get back to the dirty work this week. Today was “date day” for my wife and I. Once a month we go out to breakfast and in general just spend time doing something. We usually go to a book sale, but today we went shopping for Mother’s Day gifts. Later while she was doing school work I went to the shop.

I quickly pulled out the headliner. Surprisingly it came out as one piece. Aside from being dirty it was in really good shape. I’ll hold onto it for a pattern when I get the upholstery done. Above it was the original asbestos laden insulation. Nothing like a little lung cancer!

After that I started working on something I have been looking forward to doing for a while – assembling the disc brakes! I go the caliper bracket mounted on both spindles and the rotors on the spindles. That also included mounting the dust shields, and installing all of the bearings. I read a tip online somewhere about greasing bearings by putting them in a sandwich bag with the grease and kneading the grease into the bearing through the bag. It worked great and didn’t make a mess! Make sure you use disc brake bearing grease.

The most aggravating aspect of this whole thing was trying to install the dust caps. Now I know why every dust cap ever installed in existence, in all of history of all time ever, is beat to shit. They’re a pain in the ass to install. I gave up for today and will return with a piece of 1.5″ pipe with a cap on it. I hope by beating on that it will spare the dust cap from getting smashed up.

I didn’t get the calipers installed either. I needed about six hands to hold everything while I beat on the key. Since it was just me today, that wasn’t happening. I’ll get my dad to help me next weekend.
