Initially I didn’t plan on shaving the trunk lock. I kind of like the look of the piece that holds lock.

However, the more that I looked at pictures of other cars the more I liked the look of the smooth deck lid. That meant I had to find a way to add a trunk release of some sorts to the car. Since I’m not using door poppers I figured I wouldn’t use a solenoid for the trunk release either. I looked for a cable release and found one on Watson’s Streetworks. I figured I would mount it to the rear seat riser so it would be accessible from the driver seat, but also out of the way. The rear seat bottom will sit above it and hide it a little bit. The trickiest part of this was figuring out how to attach the bare cable to the latch mechanism without modifying the latch. Shaving emblems is one thing, but when you modify a hard to find piece like a trunk latch, that can not be undone. So I had to find a way to attach it without changing the latch, in case I wanted to return the car to stock some time later. After a lot of googling I found a unique solution that would allow me to use the stock latch , but it would also allow me to quickly make adjustments or disassemble things if need be. I used a hook from a picture hanging cable system by Systematic Art that is self tightening. It doesn’t require a set screw or anything like that. Check out the pictures and videos below for more info. The whole project cost me $50.
